7 Ways to Create the Perfect Reading Space
Share
There’s nothing quite like curling up with a good book in a cozy, inviting space designed for uninterrupted literary bliss. Whether you have an entire reading nook or just a favorite chair, a well-crafted reading space can transform a hobby into a true expression of self-care. A few years ago, we searched for an interior designer who matched our aesthetic but could also elevate our sense of design. We knew we had our team when we found Paige Williams Interior Design. The bathroom on their website? Ours, too! In fact, Paige has renovated pretty much our entire house over time! She even created my own personal favorite reading nook!
Here are seven simple ways to elevate your reading space
1. Find the Perfect Reading Chair or Sofa
Your reading seat is the heart of your cozy retreat- choose wisely! A plush armchair, a deep-set couch, or even a cozy chaise lounge can make all the difference in how long you stay lost in a book. Look for supportive cushions, soft upholstery, and enough space to curl up. If you love long reading sessions, an ottoman or footstool can add extra comfort for propping up your feet. Paige suggests a deep swivel chair in a soft velvet fabric like this:
2. Set the mood with lighting
The right lighting makes all the difference between squinting at the page and getting lost in the story. Soft, warm lighting is ideal- think a dimmed table lamp, fairy lights, or a flickering candle to create a cozy glow. For late-night reading, a stylish book light or an amber-hued bulb can help reduce eye strain and make the experience even more inviting. Paige loves the rechargeable desk lamps from Visual Comfort. The fact that they're wireless means you can take them anywhere! There are several different models to choose from depending on your budget. The Nevis and the Doppia are on the lower side of their lamp selections while the Melange comes at a higher price point.

For a pop of color, these LED lamps or these colorful cuties from Anthropologie add lighting and a fun splash of color to any room. For a more neutral color palette, the Marcella from Lulu and Georgia is very pretty.

3. Layer in Plush Textures
A well-designed reading space should feel like a hug. Soft blankets, chunky knit throws, and plush pillows turn any spot into a snuggle-worthy sanctuary. Choose textures that feel luxurious to the touch- velvet, faux fur, or ultra-soft cotton- to add warmth and comfort to your space. An ultra-soft throw can help you snuggle in for a good read. I'm loving this snake throw from Barefoot Dreams or the Cotton Cashmere Knit Blanket from Quince.
In her 11+ years of designing and decorating, Paige has had so much fun decorating with pillows that she even started her own pillow company- Paiges Pillow Party! From dot's to florals to whimsical patterns, each pillow offers a touch of elegance.

4. Add Personal Accents
Your reading space should reflect your personality and aesthetic while remaining free of clutter. Incorporate bookish decor, framed quotes from your favorite novels, or a shelf lined with your most-loved reads. A small table for your current book stack, a scented candle, and fresh or dried flowers make the space feel intentional and complete. Consider a simple gold book cart or even a bar cart like this one from Article to keep your TBR close. Or, Paige suggests a rattan tray like this.
Your book shelf can also become a space to show off you personality. From simple book ends like these (aptly named Otto which happens to be my nephew's name) or these to decorative wooden blocks like these, you can find something that fits your space beautifully.
Lastly, don't forget the greenery! Whether you prefer a fresh bouquet, a single bud or a long lasting plant, flowers can add a touch of freshness and color. A beautiful vase is a work of art in and of itself. I like these and this one but anything that catches your eye will work. Also, if anyone has tried Easy Plant? They're self-watering which intrigues me! I'm a plant killer, unfortunately.
5. Engage the Senses
Enhance your reading experience by engaging all five senses. Light a scented candle or room diffusers with notes of vanilla, cedarwood, or fresh linen to create a soothing ambiance, or opt for rich, earthy scents like tobacco and leather that evoke warm, nostalgic, and subtly seductive atmosphere. Pair it with a steaming mug of tea, coffee, or hot cocoa (and a cup warmer) to complete the perfect reading ritual. I must admit, I've been on a candle-buying spree, searching for scents that perfectly capture the mood I envision for my Luxe & Lit boxes. I'm loving these beautiful candles from Ennui. Not only do they smell amazing but they are just so pretty. I'll soon be featuring Project Happiness Candles as well! They're another of my faves (the Oakmoss and Amber has been a huge hit as we've been sampling scents). I prefer earthy and herbal scents to florals but these all smell wonderful! I have some other brands coming so keep an eye on the Candle Collection for more options! Fall candles are my favorite. How about you?
6. Minimize Distractions
Nothing kills the reading vibe like constant interruptions. Create a distraction-free zone by silencing notifications, setting your phone aside, and making sure your space feels separate from daily chaos. Unless you’re reading from a Kindle, designate your reading nook as a tech-free zone- just you, your book, and uninterrupted bliss. Speaking of Kindles, I want every.single.one of these Kindle covers from Page.
7. The Great Outdoors
Lastly, let’s not forget the joy of reading outside! There’s something magical about getting lost in a book with fresh air and natural light all around you. Whether it’s a sunny afternoon on the porch, a cozy corner of an outdoor cafe, or a breezy park bench, creating a comfortable outdoor reading space can make all the difference.
While it’s harder to control the elements and potentially the seating space, taking into account shade, lighting, changing temperatures and pesky bugs can keep you reading in comfort. Having snacks and hydration also helps!
Paige is all about giving back to the community and loves this Love Heals water bottle (and really all the products) from Thistle Farms. It's a great non-profit here in Nashville that helps women survivors recover and heal from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction.
In crafting the perfect reading space, remember that it's not just about aesthetics, but about creating a sanctuary that reflects your personal style and enhances your reading experience. Whether you're cozying up indoors with soft textures and ambient lighting, or enjoying the outdoors with a refreshing breeze, your reading space should be a retreat from distractions. By engaging your senses, minimizing interruptions, and adding personal touches, you can transform any corner into a haven of literary bliss. Happy reading!

Adina
